Is Pet Homelessness Really A Problem?

How does pet homelessness become a problem?

Many people don't consider that pet adoption requires responsibility.  Adopting a pet is a long term commitment - most pets live 10-15 years, but some live longer!  There are costs involved in owning a pet such as regular veterinary visits, having pets spayed or neutered, and making sure they have care like heart worm treatment.  Owning a pet takes work!

How widespread is the problem?

In the United States 8 million healthy dogs and cats are killed because not enough homes are open to adopt them.  The problem grows when pets are not spayed or neutered.

Is it really a problem in Atlanta?

Pet Homelessness is a real problem in Georgia.  The Atlanta metro area has hundreds of dog and cat rescue groups.  Not only that, over 100,000 pets are euthanized in Atlanta animal shelters per year.  In addition, pet orphan rescues (like Good Mews) and other shelters take in many stray pets.  Lastly, there are many strays roaming the streets of Atlanta.
